Have you ever tried CrossFit?

CrossFit can seem intimidating even to an experienced exerciser. Karianne Anthes, the owner of Motown Fitness in Morristown, NJ, seeks to break that stigma in this episode.

Segment 1
Karianne and Mike discuss her background in fitness, finding CrossFit, and eventually opening up one of the first CrossFit gyms in New Jersey. Karianne and her team of coaches have built a strong community with their members.  Opening their original location in 2010, moving the gym to Morristown in 2012, and then into their current location in 2014, Karianne and Motown Fitness rode the early wave of the CrossFit phenomenon as well as Morristown's boom. Even though they are a CrossFit gym, Karianne recognizes that members of the community see Motown Fitness as "a good gym to go to."

Today in New Jersey History: Poet Joyce Kilmer, best known for his poem "Trees" was born on December 6, 1886 in New Brunswick, NJ.

Segment 2
Karianne explains the benefits of CrossFit and its competitive nature. Competition is key in CrossFit, not so much competition between athletes, but competition with themselves. What also separates CrossFit from other exercise classes is you are consistently moving through a full range of motion, combining strength training, cardio, and flexibility. Being involved and working out with the Motown Fitness community, "there is no substitute for hard work." It doesn't matter what you do, how much money you have, or what care you drive, once you walk through the door everyone is the same.

New Jersey Fun Fact: New Jersey has a state fish, the brook trout!

Segment 3
Since Motown Fitness is a community gym, between their members, Karianne, and her husband Bill, who is a veteran, they are always looking to support causes and initiatives important to them. They put together events and classes for local youth, workout classes that benefit support for Veteran suicide awareness.
